Inaugural IPKL 2024 to commence on October 4; Haryana to host

The chants of “kabaddi, kabaddi” which have captured India and the South Asian subcontinent will now echo across the United States, with the introduction of perhaps the next big thing in kabaddi – Battle Tag.

Founded by Kevin Varghese and Vishal Singh, the rebranded version of kabaddi will feature 40 minutes of intense kabaddi action. The twist comes if the match is tied. A freestyle wrestling bout will follow to determine the winning team.

Sportskeeda caught up with co-founder Vishal Singh, where he opened up on all that goes behind starting a league from scratch and the ambitions for the tournament.

Hailing from Dhanbad, where kabaddi was a massive part of his life, Vishal has adored the sport and grew up playing it. He also noticed that the sport was one of the biggest crowd-pullers after cricket during his university days.

Tag, You're It: Kabaddi, Kabaddi, Kabaddi!

As a sports fan that enjoys competition in a wide range of formats, I’m always on the lookout for new sports to check out. Recently, at the recommendation of one of my glorious co-workers here at The Peak, I watched my first ever match of Kabaddi, and discovered a fast-paced sport best described as a blend of tag, wrestling, and, uh, swimming.

Kabaddi is a team sport played on a small court. Interestingly, it’s one of the few organized team sports that requires no special equipment or clothing to play. For tournaments, teams are classified by weight and age class, given the intensely physical nature of the sport. Teams consist of 12 players, though only seven are allowed on the court for each team at any given time, and each team must designate one active player on the court as a raider. The function of the raider is to score offensive points by entering the opposing team’s side of the court and tagging as many opposing players as possible. On the other side of things, a team scores a defensive point by preventing the opposing teams raider from returning to their own side. Bonus points are also available if a raider is able to cross into the opposing teams zone, touch their bonus line, and return safely to their own side without being taken down. On top of all of this, the raider must hold their breath for the entire time they are in the opposing teams zone, which is where the swimming skills come in.

The sport is most popular in Southern Asia, though its relevance is growing significantly in the UK as well. India is generally considered the centre of the Kabaddi universe, and has won the first three iterations of the Kabaddi World Cup. Recently, a professional Kabaddi league, known as Vivo Pro Kabaddi, was started in India. The league has 12 teams and televises its most popular matches on Star Sports.

After watching (and enjoying) my first Kabaddi match online, the next question that came to my mind was: do people play Kabaddi near me? And, if so, can I join? While it appears the local Kabaddi community is vibrant enough to warrant the construction of a $3.7 million dollar stadium in Surrey, I’d personally never seen or heard of Kabaddi being played in the Vancouver area. However, a quick google search revealed the BC United Kabaddi Federation and the Vancouver Kabaddi Club as two of the most prominent organizing bodies in the region, with opportunities for those new to the sport to give it a try. Now that my interest in and desire to play Kabaddi has been sparked, I guess it’s time to start preparing for the 2020 Canada Kabaddi Cup.

The goal is to secure team franchises and ensure that Battle Tag honors the heritage of kabaddi while upholding high standards of ethics and professionalism.

Home About UFC Apex to Host Inaugural “Battle Tag” Event

What is Battle Tag? Its the soon to be launched North American rebranding of a rapidly growing professional sport from India known as Kabaddi.

Kabaddi is basically a team tag wresting elimination sport where “the objective of the game is for a single player on offence, referred to as a “raider”, to run into the opposing team’s half of the court, touch out as many of their players as possible, and return to their own half of the court, all without being tackled by the defenders in 30 seconds.” It has been practiced in India for many years but the last decade has seen an explosion for professional variants of the sport.

The quasi combative nature of the sport along with its strong financial ascent in India could explain the UFC’s initial interest in the launch and the Apex could be a ready made facility for hosting competitions.

A recent press release by K1NGM4K3RS Inc., the corporate entity behind the US Battle Tag launch, revealed the UFC Apex’s involvement noting as follows:

UFC Apex Senior Director, Beau Orth, said: “Hosting the inaugural Battle Tag [Expo] at The UFC Apex Arena in Las Vegas is incredibly thrilling! It’s an opportunity to launch a groundbreaking sporting event in one of the most iconic venues for combat sports.”

“The UFC Apex is known for its high-tech facilities and electrifying atmosphere, making it the perfect backdrop for debuting Battle Tag. The excitement is amplified by the anticipation of setting new trends and creating unforgettable moments in the world of sports entertainment.”

While there are basically no Kabaddi athletes in the US it does not take deep thinking to realize that NCAA wrestlers, football players, MMA fighters and other elite athletes could quickly make the transition.

I’ve contacted Kevin Varghese, Battle Tag’s founder, who tells me their special ruleset will even include a tie break rule where each team’s best wrestler will face off in a freestyle wrestling match to determine the winner for games that are tied at the end of regulation.

The upcoming expo will be worth keeping an eye on to see the type of interest that Battle Tag will generate with a North American audience and investors.

Battle Tag: Kabaddi set to breach new frontiers in the USA

“Welcome to the game of our land,” read the sign at the arena entrance. Inside, LCD screens flashed the names of corporate sponsors: domestic brands of incense, motorcycles and tea biscuits.

Bollywood songs blasted from speakers as packs of slim, mustached young men filed into the cheap seats. In the section below, demure young women wearing strands of jasmine in their hair sat quietly next to their more enthusiastic husbands, clad in home-team colors and hooting for the cameras.

Strobe lights flashed in disco hues and the fog machines belched plumes into the air. An announcer boomed, “Lights, camera, kabaddi!”

An ancient sport born on the Indian subcontinent, kabaddi (pronounced ka-ba-DEE) is having its modern moment. From a game played mainly by schoolchildren on patchy fields, kabaddi has graduated to a staple of prime-time television in India, with a glitzy professional league drawing homegrown and international stars, glamorous owners and hundreds of millions of viewers.

To a novice, kabaddi looks like a faster, more bruising version of tag or Capture the Flag, familiar to generations of Boy Scouts, where one side tries to steal the opposing team’s flag (or other object) without being touched.

But in some ways it’s even simpler: kabaddi has no flag, protective gear or equipment of any kind – just two halves of a playing surface, with seven players on either side.

The teams take turns sending across one player, known as a raider, to tag as many opponents as he can. Defenders must tackle him before he can return to his half.

Each tag earns a point, as do tackles that stop the raider from getting back to his side.
